Consensus seems to be that the third wire tells the blower unit which power supply it's attached to, so it knows whether it can power the humidifier and/or heated hose.

Speculation is that it may be "interlocked" to keep you from using a non-ResMed power supply, but nobody's come up with any details.

Has anyone put a voltmeter on it to confirm that two of the wires are positive 12 V and the third wire is neutral?

Do you mean 24V?

I have one of the 12v S9 power bricks. It comes with an accessory adapter that will allow you to clip onto a car battery. I will look at it to see if there are any extra details on it.
