If I pull the modem: pros & cons?

If I pull the modem: pros & cons?
This week, I received a Phillips Respironics Dream Station.  (It replaced my 9 year old faithful friend, who expired from daily use.)  The DME "coach" for this new CPAP tried to make it sound like the cell modem that was pre-installed should NEVER be removed.  In the most condescending way possible, she tried to list the benefits of the modem...............as SHE sees them.

To clarify, I'm NOT a person who's in denial about the need for CPAP.  I've been a faithful user since the sleep study showed 96 AHI, before I got my first machine.  I fully recognize the life quality improvement that it has made to my life.  Being 6 days without one was miserable and the bureaucratic delay was taxing on my patience.

The Dreammapper software is a benefit to me, personally.  I appreciate being able to read the stats on my computer and via Bluetooth on my smart phone.

BUT, I resent the fact that a cellular modem can triangulate my location at any moment or wherever I choose to travel.  I also resent the fact that the DME chick can change my settings, at will, and that they will send reminders and supply replenishment messages through my machine.

With my first machine, I was fine with an SD memory card, and the new machine still has one.  But adding the spy modem is just too much.  I'm relieved to know that this one CAN be eliminated instead of the ResMed's AirSense 10 that is embedded.

That thing makes me think of a familiar tune:
It knows WHERE you've been sleeping,
       It knows if you're awake,
It knows if you're compliant or not,
So remove it for security sake!

If I pull it now, will the insurance have an issue, since it's it's a replacement with a 4 month payment?

When I pull it, will the Blue tooth still work for my smart phone?

Please understand that if you're one of the posters who cannot see the privacy / security issue, I'm not interested in a philosophical debate.  It's going to be yanked out either now, or after it's all paid for in four months.

What I'm looking for are practical pros & cons of what I'll have to deal with WHEN I remove it from the machine.

The only downside that I can think of is it being used to show compliance for your insurance to pay the supplier.  Make sure you can reconnect it while it's in warranty and needs service.

Crimson Nape, I appreciate your reasoning.  In four months, when the insurance company has finished their involvement, I'll probably move that modem to the nightstand drawer.  Let it try to report from there.  LOL
If I leave the SD card connected, I can still report any warranty issues with it later.
Thanks!

I'd say the only reason to keep it, from your perspective, is compliance. After that is passed, pull the plug on the modem if you wish. Maybe, and this is likely way out there, as the manufacturer almost won't have software updates, but the modem would be the software update method of connection as I understand it.

After disconnection, DreamMapper will stop gathering info BTW. But, that is NOT a reason to keep the modem connected, as the SD card can transfer data to the PC to view charts via SleepyHead for free if you wish to keep tabs on your therapy.

The modem has no affect on dreammapper that's transmitted via bluetooth. Just pull the modem out. You can tell the DME you'll be happy to share your SD card for compliance or you can give them printouts from Encore Pro II. You can download Encore Pro II here if you decide to go that route. I'd buy an extra SD card and just copy the info onto it for the DME if you go that way.

Thanks for the correction to what I'd believed as known. So noted.

RE: If I pull the modem: pros & cons?
Thank you to SarcasticDave94 and WallaWalla,

It's great to know that the Bluetooth function is not linked into the cellular modem.  I'll still be able to check anything that the smartphone app of DreamMapper can send it.

In the short term I have some time to download SleepyHead and / or Encore II.  Maybe there'll be an announcement of firmware upgrade & I can temporarily plug in the modem for that to happen.

So glad to be able to come here for information and support.  I'm going to look into sending a donation, so that this synergy can keep going for all of us.

Unlike ResMed, theDreamstation Modem is used locally by the DME. Philips Respironics doesn't send machine updates over the modem. For updates you'd have to take it into the DME anyway. Of course you could also try to download the updates from here also.

One more reason to be glad that I chose DreamStation over the AirSense 10.

RE: If I pull the modem: pros & cons?
I live in an area with very spotty cell phone coverage. When I got my Resmed S9 years ago I never plugged in the modem even though I do happen to get a signal at my house and the DME never complained, they just mailed me a new SD card to swap with the one in the machine and then mail the original back. If I ever get a new machine I would also not use the modem.
