New here - Post Sleep Study Question
Wish I had found site this sooner. Many questions - but for today - how vaild is a lab sleep study if you are told by the technician to sleep on your back - which I did for the entire test. I do know that I have OSA - but am questioning this as I am primarily a side sleeper but do  sleep on my back occassionally. I could quite easily not ever sleep on my back again - and as I understand this, that position increases the apneas. So, my results are just over the Severe level with 38 episodes per hour / OSA and CSA. Would be interested in hearing if this manner of testing is the way it is done. Also - assuming that the overnight studies are the best way to get an accurate test - or not ( ? ) Thanks very much !

RE: New here - Post Sleep Study Question
Unfortunate me I've had several sleep studies. Each one the tech did coach to attempt some side sleeping time. I think the reason would be, in part, to give a good sample of possible sleep position info.

Given that as a valid reason, I think you'll be OK with the results. Even if you never sleep on your back, they like to sample the "what if".

RE: New here - Post Sleep Study Question
I imagine the reason you had a sleep test is because you or your doctor thought you had symptoms suggestive of sleep disturbed sleeping.  It is more pronounced on our backs, making it easier to meet insurance requirements to allow a machine prescription.  We often try to get back sleepers to shift to their sides.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies - can't seem to figure out how to respond individually. Yes, I knew that a Sleep Study was in order. Good point that the technicians are geared to get the study participant to sample both back and side sleeping. I was just questioning the fact that I was only on my back for the entire study - and am 95% a side sleeper.

RE: New here - Post Sleep Study Question
As for responding, this is just fine. You can manually sorta tag individuals if it's necessary to be specific, but for most things this seemingly generic reply is fine.

The test should reflect reasonably accurate. I myself have a very bad back, and don't give much back sleep time even in the recent in lab test I had to take for the new doctor. Even brief samples of back sleeping should suffice.
