[Pressure] Dreamstation Recall replacement = double apneas?
#1
Dreamstation Recall replacement = double apneas?
So I got my replacement Dreamstation from the Philips recall. I have been using it for roughly about 1.5 months now.
I made sure to take pictures of my settings on my original Dreamstation and setup the new one with the exact same settings.

Cflex -3
pressure - 11
Mask type off
tube size 22

Basically i just copied what my old one was set at.
With my old dreamstation my apneas were anywhere from 0.1-0.8, avg was about 0.3 AHI.

Now with the new machine on same settings it has gone up to 1-3 AHI. On my old machine, if i held my breath, I would feel the machine ramp up pressure, with this new one, I see no difference in pressure when I hold my breath, it's like it is not even attempting to stop an apnea.

Lastly, in the past I always woke up pretty rested and no tiredness during the day. Now I wake up like i been run over by a truck and once 2-3 pm hits i am dying to take a nap.

Has anyone who has received a replacement run into these issues? I have gone and increased the pressure to 13 last night and it seems to be better, but wondering why such a change? was the part they replaced due to the recall give different pressure rating?

Thanks

The Phillips recall that I'm aware of was due to bad foam within the units. As for an AHI of 3 now versus something less prior, it's still treated according to those numbers. Zero AHI is not your goal, controlled apnea and comfort are.

One thing you might consider changing is CFlex 3 down to 2. In the past some have noted disturbance due to a setting of 3 here.

thank you, i did try cflex-2 for a few nights and found that it was even worse. I will try that again for the next few nights.

I tried Oscar for the first time, to get a better understanding of what is happening, but i really have no clue what i am looking at.  I feel like contacting my supplier and telling them i want my old machine back. LOL

A few things I'm seeing of note, it appears as if there's several sessions, 2 short and one longer. Also is what appears to be a 20 minute ramp setup. If ramp was used, that can cause some CPAP users various things including disturbances when ramp expires. I'm not saying this is the cause, but a possible. I think Phillips ramp is activated via a button, so it may not actually be in play.

Stand by for better answers and suggestions. I've been tuned out of anything apnea therapy for a little bit, since I'm fighting to get the right device myself. And being me, I need a specialized device not that basic CPAP, with central apnea on top of emphysema COPD.

Thanks for your response, I never use RAMP, it has to be manually activated. As for the sessions, a lot of times when I go to bed, I put on the mask while I am reading, and when I get sleepy I just turn off the nightlight and go to sleep.

Lately, though, I put on the mask when ready to sleep, however find my self fighting with the breathing , and often turn the machine off, go for a walk around the house and come back , hence why it might show more sessions.

For years I loved my CPAP and honestly I couldn’t live without it, even bought a power station for when I go camping and also have a travel DS Go. Now I feel like I wanna throw this thing out the window or grab a sledge hammer to it. lol.

RE: Dreamstation Recall replacement = double apneas?
I just got my replacement Dreamstation, Model CAX501S12F, which replaces a CAX500T12C, two days ago. I too replicated the exact settings from the recalled one. I am also seeing the treated AHI having about doubled. Used to run an average around 3 for a month with a range of 1.5-4. First two days with the new machine it is running 5-6.

I have both Oscar and Sleepy Head and am familiar with using both. So far, I cannot figure out the pattern, except for the fact the pressure does not seem to increase as much as it should during an event. With the Auto CPAP function it should ramp up to 19 or 20 if required and so far it doesn't seem to be doing that. Luckily I still have my old machine in my possession. I am going to try this new one for a few more days but if performance does not improve it will be going back for replacement.

Would be very interested to hear what others are seeing from their replacement machines.

I recently switched from a Phillips machine to a ResMed machine. With the ResMed machine, I was able to lower my pressure by quite a bit and have better control than before with the Dreamstation. Imo, the ResMed algorithm is way better in anticipation of flow limits and adjusting the pressure accordingly. At this point, I can't believe I used the Phillips machine for so long.

I too have been considering getting a ResMed machine. Research and everyone I talk to seem to be FAR happier with it. My old Phillips actually worked well and I did not find the pressures a problem, but I am way less than impressed with the replacement. May end up just reselling it as next to new and move to thee ResMed. Especially if a lot ofothers are having these issues with the new replacements.

Bit of an update. After using the new machine for just over a week, AHI is back in the normal range and the machine seems to work as good as the one it replaced. No idea if the algorithm learns or I did but all seems to working as desired now.
