Triggers asthma everytime I try CPAP machine. Wondering if Alex or cflex+ would help
Have tried CPAP machine on 3 different trials. Every time after about a week or less, it triggers asthma mostly in the bronchial. Don't have any symptoms of the COPD when not on CPAP. Respirologist prescribed symbicort and spiriva. Start that today, then in 2 weeks will try CPAP machine again. I think it was the difficulty with exhale that was causing the flare ups.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what machine, settings, and mask worked best? Also have been trying to understand the c flex+ and a flex wondering if that would help. Any suggestions because I really need to be on apnea therapy. My sleep study showed I had average 34.6 apnea hour, but when on my back had 108 an hour. So I really need this to work.

Achtweety, welcome to the forum. Anyone with symptoms of asthema that result in not tolerating CPAP should simply talk to the doctor, and discuss these symptoms. What you need is BiPAP with a low exhale pressure that will make exhale easy. CFlex will not do this adequately no matter what anyone tells you. Try to get your prescription changed to Bilevel, and preferably Auto bilevel. The main machines here are the Resmed Aircurve 10 Vauto and Philips Dreamstation BiPAP Auto.
Drugs may or may not be the answer, but the fact you need them as a result of CPAP therapy is a blazing red light that says "STOP", revise the treatment to accommodate or solve the problem, don't mask it with drugs!

thank you. that is what I have been trying to say to my Dr. but he keeps saying bi pap wont change anything. So frustrating. Because without the cpap therapy I don't have any symptoms of asthma or COPD, except with flu's and cold's.

Your doctor needs to listen, or you need a new doctor. Are you working with your primary or a specialist to manage CPAP?

Surprising someone trained in this would simply reject off-hand that bilevel in the presence of COPD or asthma is in any way counter-indicated. You could try to get a prescription from your primary doctor, or self-treat. Lots of bilevel machines are out there. The Dreamstation Auto CPAP would be the worst choice, I think you could get by with a Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset or even the CPAP which offers up to 3-cm of pressure relief. What machine do you have, and what is the prescribed pressure(s)?

If Schtweetly is in Ontario, snd wishes to take advantage of the Assistive Devices Program, she will have to get her prescription from a registered sleep specialist...From the 4793-67E_Information.pdf (retrieved from the Ontario ADP site):
To receive funding assistance for CPAP/APAP/BPAP systems you must be assessed by a physician who works at a sleep clinic registered with the ADP.
An email to the ADP people can get a list of your local registered clinics (five in Toronto proper).

Yep, pholynyk has the strait skinny, and that's too bad because Schtweety's "specialist" is uncooperative and obstructive.
Schtweety, I don't know where you are, but even if you're in a low-population area, this is of such importance that it would be a wise investment to travel to meet with another practitioner.

Canada! So many people here in the USA think this is the health system they want. Government control has its consequences.
If you decide to self treat, I would be delighted to help direct you to an affordable solution, and would be doubly happy when you show your doctor what is possible when you actually practice medicine and understand PAP therapy.
