in need for help & advices
Hi everyone,
I registered on the forum because I need some advices. I snore at night, and from time to time my boyfriend tells me in the morning that I stopped breathing. Some periods are worst than others, and during those periods I am in a "zombie mode". And the more tired I feel, the more I've got a kind of deep sleep that makes me snore and stop breathing even more. Those periods last 1 - 3 months, and then I just snore without stopping to breathe, and I feel better... before the bad periods start again.
I went to the doctor once, but given the fact that I am a 22 year old women, not overweight at all, and without high blood pressure, he just didn't believe me. He gave me a nasal spray with cortisone which didn't help at all.
I'm considering to go back though.
In the meantime, I'm asking your help to get advices on what I can do to improve this?
I am in a period in which I'm again snoring a lot and stopping breathing even by sleeping on the side, and I am tired to be tired... And again this is the vicious cycle, the more I'm tired, the more I snore and stop breathing.
Thanks for your help!

RE: in need for help & advices
Hi els24,
You have classic signs of Sleep Apnea, but since you don't fit the typical Sleep Apnea patient profile, your doctor isn't listening to you.

Try to search out a Sleep Apnea doctor in your area and make an appointment, or call a sleep clinic and seek advice.

You need to be aggressive and pursue this so you can be tested.

If all else fails, if you can afford to buy an Apap yourself, you can go that route, in which we may be able to help and advise.

Good luck and don't give up.

RE: in need for help & advices
Bonjour els24, and welcome to the Apnea Board. It certainly looks like you need a sleep study to confirm your need for some type of CPAP therapy. You probably need to find a doctor who specializes in Sleep Apnea to get the sleep study and a prescription for a CPAP machine. Doing a Google search I found a "European Sleep Center" in Paris that seems to be the kind of place you need. You could search for a similar facility near where you live you if you don't live near Paris. In the mean time, you could try sleeping on your side to reduce the Apnea. You have found the place for help regarding your Sleep Apnea. Stay in touch. There are many people here who can offer help.

Hi ! Thanks for your answers. I took an appointment with an other doctor and an ENT today. I couldn't find a specialist in sleep apnea in my area.
I'll come back to you when I'll reach the next step !
Are the machines the only way to treat sleep apnea ?

Are the machines the only way to treat sleep apnea ?

Obstructive sleep apnea has a number of potential treatment options. Since you are going to an ENT specialist, you can be assured, he will look for physical causes of obstruction, and may offer a surgical option, in addition to CPAP. By selecting an ENT, you are nearly 100% assured of being examined using endoscopy through your nose and into your throat. Some ENTs are predisposed to surgical options, and you should be cautious if that is discussed as an option.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (also known by the abbreviations UPPP and UP3) is a surgical procedure or sleep surgery used to remove tissue and/or remodel tissue in the throat. Tissues which may typically be removed include tonsils, adenoids, uvula, soft palate, and sculpting or ablation of the pharynx and tongue. This is a painful and generally only modestly successful in mitigating sleep apnea, so if surgery is suggested as an option, please proceed with caution, and preferably get a second opinion.

CPAP alone is effective in most cases of obstructive sleep apnea, and you should try this before subjecting yourself to any surgery or mandibular advancement dental device or surgery. The ENT is a very qualified specialist who can help diagnose, and refer you for sleep studies and manage your care, but they often make their living dealing with these problems surgically, rather than with CPAP. Just be aware of this predisposition, and state your interest in CPAP up-front. The honest truth is, you don't need a specialist to help you diagnose or treat OSA.
