Did look at hiring one but the cheapest I could find was $49 Aust a month with prices going up for better machines. At those prices it wouldn't take long before it would be cheaper to buy!

My hire was $160 a month!! Luckily my purchased machine showed up before I ticked over into the next month.

Gee they know how to charge! The price i mentioned in previous post I found online at Gumtree.

RE: CPAP online purchase
I have bought masks and supplies from Supplier No. 10 and found them brilliant, cheap and with amazing service plus quick delivery.

Another purchase question from outside Australia. I am thinking about buying the new ResMed AirSense 10 machine from the US. With exchange rates & all I note this is over AUD1000 which is the normal import threshold for GST and a much more complicated costly importation on most goods.

Does anyone know if these machines are GST (&/or duty) free or had negative experiences with Customs on importation?

Happy days
PJ.

CPAP Machines are exempt from gst, code B124 in the medical equipment exemptions list - from the Australian customs web site. I purchased machine, chin strap, masks & power adapter in the one purchase & after exchange rate the total was just over $1400 AUD, I was charged a $50 customs fee (via FedEx) which is obviously not GST on the whole purchase as that would have been more than double, but this reminds me I never got any paperwork about the fee despite asking at the time. FedEx phoned me for the payment when the parcel landed in Australia, there wasn't any delay as far as I could tell, it was to my door in under a week from placing the order.

Thanks very much Crist. Good news indeed. I suspect the $50 was probably a clearance fee from Customs, but just a guess....

Thanks

Yes definetly Supplier #10. I have just purchased mine from there and am waiting for it to arrive. They have an online chat during their business hours if you have any queries about any items on the site. Far cheaper than a phone call to USA or waiting for an email reply, even though they are quick at responding to those. I have made 2 seperate orders as I didnt know about the customs exemption for medical equipment. Anyway no matter. Still far cheaper doing that way than buying from rip off Australian Sleep Therapists. Was bad enough hiring a machine from them for $200 for the month and then another $100 to hire the mask. Originally they wanted me to purchase the mask at a cost of $250. I made a lot of noise and they then said they would hire the mask.
Also worth noting about Supplier #10 they also accept Paypal as a payment method.
Now just the wait for it to arrive. I keep checking Fedex and hoping for a miracle, but it will be here on Wednesday, so cant wait.

Do on-line DMEs usually rent CPAPs/masks? My insurance requires a minimum of 3 months of rent to ensure compliance before they'll cover the charges to purchase.

Most online companies do not deal with insurance at all. They will provide you with the answers you need to fill out the forms yourself.
