I expect that customers are more of an asset or a resource to be exploited than an employer to these companies - like ore to be strip mined. They consider the shareholders their employer, not their customers. :-(

However, I hope you can convince them otherwise :-)

OTOH, if they frustrate patients to the point where they buy their own supplies on the internet, that's a cost reduction for the insurance company. The incentives are pretty indirect, and messed up.

I need to fire my DME as they have stopped answering the phone number for ordering supplies. I can buy these things (masks and pillows) from Amazon no problem but I am on Medicare and would just as soon Medicare paid for it. Is there a web site where I can find DMEs that are 1) Medicare approved, and 2) will ship to my location?

Do you have a Medicare supplemental plan?  That's where we get stuck with certain DME providers.  If you are working strictly off of Medicare just call some providers and ask them if they are Medicare providers.
When is this “old enough to know better” supposed to kick in?

Yes, I have a "medigap" plan through AARP.  But they will only cover those expenses that Medicare would cover, and Medicare only covers "approved" DME suppliers.  I did find the list at medicare.gov and looked up a few of them near me - they all get review ratings 2/5 or less, all for the same reason -lousy customer service.

My doctor once told me that there used to be two kinds of DME supplier: "bad" and "terrible".   But now that has changed and they are all "terrible".
