F40 mask making a pitched whine noise on inhale?

F40 mask making a pitched whine noise on inhale?
Hi there,

Been trying an F40 mask, medium cushion for a 2nd night and for some reason there's this kind of pitched whine noise when I inhale.  Couldn't find a leak on mask or tube.  Anyone have any experience of this kind?

Also noticed that while I was having this issue my O2 dropped fast to mid-80's, makes me a bit scared of this mask.

My experience is that the F40 can sound like it's leaking when it's not.

I have heard, from other masks, that a divider in the nose portion can vibrate and make a significant sound. That might be what you're experiencing.

Have you washed your mask recently?

I've been using an AirFit F40 for a good while now. Every now & then, it sounds to me like it's leaking, when in reality it's not.

I usually just take my hand and adjust it a bit. That seems to do the trick.

I echo Big Guy. I move mine microscopically 'til it shuts up and go back to sleep.

RE: F40 mask making a pitched whine noise on inhale?
I used it for a while and had issues (made the underside of my nose sore and I had higher AHIs with it), but recently gave it a go again for two nights because I REALLY WANT TO LIKE IT. (I use the F30i which works well for me, but I hate the noise and the jetstream of air that comes from it. I love the QuietAir elbow.)

I noticed a very slight high-pitched noise just as I changed from inhale to exhale, and wondered if it had something to do with the change of pressure as I switched? I didn't notice this before, but at that time I was on fixed pressure, and I'm currently using Autoset with a range. The sound was very slight, but noticeable since the mask is otherwise so quiet for me.

I didn't have any whine during inhale, though, unless the mask wasn't seated correctly and was leaking around the nose - which actually happened a lot when sleeping on my side and moving a bit.

But after 2 nights, I decided to go back to the F30i. The F40 just leaked too much but if I tightened it more, hurt my nose. My AHI also went up for those nights due to more hypopneas, RERAs, and CAs.

Do note that ResMed says you should be using the "pillows" setting for this mask, not full-face. I actually tried it both ways, but it didn't seem to matter.

This was on the 2nd night with a new mask.

I've heard people say that sometimes there is something in the little exhale holes.  Last night I blew air through them and I don't know if that was the cause, but at least it didn't happen last night.

One thing I did notice is that you don't want to tighten the mask too much before you turn it on.  You kind of want it to sit there normally when the pressure kicks in and then just tighten enough so it doesn't leak.  If you tighten it too much I think you end up either uncomfortable or with more leaks.

My nose do get a bit sore though with the medium cushion, thinking of trying the large one for that reason, but everything might end up just too wide.

I just tried the F40 medium size cushion mask myself. I only took a short nap, but I didn't notice any high pitched noises.  However, the seal was the best I have ever had.  Machine said 0ml leak and zero AHI.  Is 0ml leak even possible?

The F40 also gave the nose bridge a break. I normally use a Vitera FFM with mask liner, but nose bridge is always a bit red/irritated.

I did wake up with left nostril soreness, dry mouth and a headache.  Not sure if that has anything to do with the mask.  If so, maybe I need to notch up the humidity level.

This mask is cool, but very weird. I hope I can continue using it....
