How to get an ASV, Ontario Canada

Hi all,

I'm so sick of this not working. I've had CPAP for 3 years and wear it all the time. I have tried so many different settings on my machine over the years. The centrals never die down. 

I have posted charts on here before and you guys said to get an ASV. I haven't brought it up to my sleep doctors yet.

I have gone to my sleep doctors like 5 or 6 times over the years. They review the data every couple of months. My AHI is always in the 8-12 range. I still wake up in the last hours of sleep the most. They never brought up the possibility of an ASV. They just say "A lot of centrals...that's weird"

I did not have centrals on my first sleep study in lab. 


Anyway, does anyone know how I can get an ASV in Ontario Canada? 

I guess now that Covid 19 is here, I'm not getting anything for a while.

Hi Greg, another Canadian here.  

If you want a prescription you have to talk to your sleep specialist.  You're going to have to be plain spoken and tell them you are not satisfied with the results,  tell them you have given it the old college try, it hasn't worked, so you want them to work with you to make it better. 

In Ontario I haven't seen ASV machines on their list.    Pretty much you will be on your own in terms of cost.  If you have extended health through your work, they might pay some of the cost.  You would need to contact them to find out if they do and the requirements for reimbursement. 

The other route you could go is no prescription and buy through Supplier No 2.  They sell refurbished ASVs.  Sometimes they have new ones.  Prices will be in USD.  The exchange rate is close to 40% lately so you will get killed on that.

There is a confusingly lot of different types of ASV machines.  You would need help from the forum members to figure out what you require.  The  new prices range from under $2K USD to under $5K USD for new machines.  Some used machines I have seen for $800 +/-.

A lot of money if you're paying out of pocket.

A low-hours Resmed Aircurve 10 ASV at Supplier #2 is $1349 USD and will be provided with great service and warranty. It will work! I believe they sell new unit or open-box for $2149 USD. Supplier #2 has lots of experience with international shipping and has provided units to our members around the world in Canada, Australia, Asia and Europe.

Lower prices on Dotmed from $240 to $700 USD plus shipping for a Resmed S9 VPAP Adapt model 36007 with the price dependent on hours on the machine. Last I looked the VPAP Adapt 36007 for $700 had zero hours while the lowest price machine was at 15K hours, so less hours is better. This is the prior generation ASV that works the same as the Aircurve 10 series but has a different form factor. It will work great, but no or limited warranty and service. If you want to go this lower-cost route, I'll help you find what you need.

The best ASV is the ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV, their S9 ASV is still very good; nearly the same algorithm but different package. Heated hoses, humidifier tubs, etc. not swappable between the 9 and 10, masks and non-heated hoses are universal though. Respironics AutoSV has a bit more pressure/therapy settings, but it seems to be a bit more hit or miss on personal therapy effectiveness and comfort.
