I was under the impression that the chinstrap simply provided support for keeping your mouth closed, but you could still open your mouth against the elastic if you really wanted. But I don't have a chinstrap myself, so I could easily be wrong.

Either way, you are going to wake up pretty quickly.

I think you can still open your mouth but the degree of difficulty depends on your strap and how tight it is. Just seems like a liability to me.
