Pschological Issues from CPAP use

Pschological Issues from CPAP use
Hi Board,

After attempting to use my CPAP machine, I began to experience a feeling that my nose was always congested and my breathing affected. It manifested itself into a psychological issue where even though I was breathing ok, I  still felt congested and would pick at my nose and constantly blow it. It would than trigger a response in my body that generated adrenaline and cortisol and not allow me to sleep. Lack of sleep has significantly impacted my life.

I know its a psychological issue because my body gets an adrenaline rush now even when i am not stuffed up from my mind perceiving congestion. I have never had issues before and and am looking for a psych fix 1st before I  retry the machine. Has anybody experienced anything like this and found a solution?

Helpful responses are greatly appreciated.

RE: Pschological Issues from CPAP use
The use of Flonase (fluticasone propionate) can reduce inflammation and relieve any congestion that may be present. Also, many people tend to wear a mask too tightly, which in fact can increase congestion or nasal airway resistance. As far as gaining mental acceptance of the therapy, it may help to do some practice sessions while awake and relaxed. I always feel the application of air opens my nasal airways and I can feel the expansion enabling nasal breathing.

Now, I'm going to tell you the "real" problem. According to your profile your pressure is at 4.0 That is not enough pressure to produce an easy airflow and is the reason you feel starved for air or congested. Open up your settings and set the minimum pressure to 7.0 and use EPR full-time at 3. You will feel airflow like you have never experienced. Inhale will be a refreshing rush of air, and the lower pressure in exhale will similarly make breathing effortless.

Thank you very much for your reply and I will make the adjustments on my machine.

1st, I need a solution for the psychological issue that has manifested itself. Even though the problem is mental, I havent found the solution. I have been trying affirmations, meditation, etc without success thus far.

I really appreciate your response sleeprider.

I think correcting the settings and achieving comfort, will allow the mind to follow. Give it a try, and if not, we will ensue this conversation with some behavior modification or substitution.
