RE: Resmed Aircurve 10 ASV Motor Life Exceeded message
Hi Sleeprider, Thank you. That would have potentially been a solution, but I am in Mexico and shipping would be difficult. I am waiting to hear from the DME if medicare approves a new ASV, and if they will send it to my NY address to be forwarded to me. My problem is that I live in a high altitude in Mexico, which affects my apnea. The latest sleep study was done in NY, at sea level, and showed that it could be controlled by a CPAP. The doctor sent the prescription for an ASV without the sleep study. If medicare does not approve the ASV I will have to purchase on myself.

When I suggested Supplier #28, a link was generated that should make it easy.
High altitude (DF is over 9000 feet) can be a big contributor to central apnea, and we have many members using various strategies to treat central apnea, but none of those involve the use of CPAP. I doubt you will have much success. ASV begins and ends with a current prescription from your doctor for that therapy, that it is medically necessary and effective. A DME cannot make that decision without a doctor's prescription. You will indeed get CPAP unless you get a better understanding of the process and an new prescription. That does NOT require a sleep test, just a doctor that knows his way around these things. We need to talk more to understand if you can get a prescription for ASV which would resolve this issue.

Hi Sterling147,
For what it’s worth, I’ve been using a ResMed S9 CPAP for the past 8+ years and have had that same Motor Life Exceeded…message on my machine for well over a year now. I visited my local supplier a few months after it first appeared and she advised me that the manufacturer’s message comes on waaaay before the end of the machine life and that it’s more about marketing than anything else. I guess my experience backs it up. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking! As your machine is a newer (and different), model, there are obviously other variables, but there’s my little anecdote for your consideration. Best of luck. (I plan to purchase an Aircurve 11 this week as we’re about to travel for two months and I don’t want to take the chance of my S9 dying on me)

Hi Sleeprider, my doctor did write a prescription to continue using an ASV. He told me that I needed a sleep study to replace my old one . I mentioned that I had received advice from this forum that all I needed was a face to face meeting and a new prescription. He ended up sending the prescription without the sleep study results (I hope). If I get a CPAP, I will have wasted a lot of money and time traveling to NY for nothing. I would have to purchase an ASV, and I don't know how I would prove compliance if I am using the ASV instead of the CPAP. Would I have to use the CPAP and prove that it does not support my apnea?
Thank you for your help. I am sure that Murphy (as in Murphy's law) is having a big party somewhere.

Hi Tangled snoozer. Thank you I feel a lot better now. When I called RESMED about the message, they told me that the motor could stop working tonight, next week, next month or in a few months.

In our Wiki article on dealing with a DME, I have included some facts on how to handle the situation when a DME says you need a sleep test. The fact is, Medicare and most insurance do not require or even acknowledge titration tests, and your diagnostic test is usually good for as long as your doctor says you have a medical need for a particular therapy. There is no requirement for titration or a new diagnostic. https://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph...Sleep_Test
In my own situation, when a DME cutoff my supplies and refused to dispense a new bilevel device without a sleep study, I simply changed DME providers.

Do not accept anything other than a ResMed AirCurve ASV. It'll probably be a new 10 series, which is still more than acceptable. When you get the new machine, plug in your current setup.
