I have a very basic surge protector that I use at home and carry when I travel. It also has a couple of USB plug ins for phone charging and the like. When we stay at a hotel, I usually put the machine in a drawer when we are not in the room. Also carry a 12 foot home extension cord just in case.

Excellent advice. I pack my machine up in the morning and take it with me. Just in case.
I like the extension cord; my surge protector has a 6 foot cord. A longer cord would be helpful.

When we went on our cruise a couple of years ago, I had to use all of my 12 foot cord plus all of the cord on the machine.
Another issue with some hotel rooms is they fill the plugs by the bed with the light and clock radio (if there is one) or the plug is behind the bed where you can't get to it.

Absolutely true.
I unplug the clock radio and leave it for them to reset.

The reason prefer an UPS instead of a standered surge suppressor is it stops the quipment from feeling the real short blips where the power can drop for a fraction of a second and come back. Also covers the condition known as brown out which is to low a voltage. Actually both these conditions can actually damage electronics more than a normal surge.
