The AirSense 11 has a microphone that listens to your mask

The AirSense 11 has a microphone that listens to your mask
I figured a lot of people would want to know about this, but apparently the AS11 has a microphone in it that is used to listen to your mask. Resmed recently pushed an OTA update that turns on this new option called AcousticSignal, which is the microphone. CPAP reviews made a video about it today.

The crazy thing is they automatically turn this setting on once the update is installed. As if we need yet another device listening in on us, especially while we are sleeping! They say that they are not recording sound or speech, but I'm skeptical. Yet another reason to buy the AS10 over the AS11.

Yeah saw that thanks, definitely turning it off when we get it here.

and yes it's crazy they can turn on a mic in your bedroom remotely and make it opt-out!

Another intrusive device is involuntarily placed in your bedroom, unlike your voluntary-placed smartphone, Alexa, or similar devices that can detect, encode, and transmit speech to a remote server.

At least, this one might be able to improve leak detection, breathing pauses, snore scoring, ambient noises that can be tracked to arousals, and assist in more complex and individual mask designs. The next thing to look for is resonator ridges in ResMed masks to condition signal generation and reporting.

There is absolutely no privacy anywhere!

I'm about ready to send Alexa to the recycle bin. Very intrusive piece of crap.

Thanks for this information. We should try to keep this setting up-front so members know they have a choice.

I'd love to be a wiki editor. I've been enjoying helping people and would love to do more!

We could definitely grab a drink sometime too!

RE: The AirSense 11 has a microphone that listens to your mask
i saw jason's post about this on yt. i have an as10, and always have it on airplane mode. my gf has the as11. two hours ago, the ota hadn't pushed through, but it did now. there is a toggle in the "more" options to turn it off.

i told her to just put the machine in airplane mode, but she likes seeing the daily "my air" cheerful 100 score, even though i've shown her the real data in oscar. lol

it isn't bad, but she still wants the ever-rosy my air report. i think a lot of people do, from what i see.

she has been warned. lol

That's some insidious work by Resmed. I wonder if they think they have a monopoly on the US market now?

i'm not a tin foil hat type, so this is my take.

do i like that they choose to do this? uh, not really. and only giving you the "opt out" option is not cool. the better way of adding this would have been to give you the option to enable it. i'm sure nobody--outside of forum members and youtube video watchers would even know this was part of the update.

they should be way more upfront about this.

but think about this. jason points out that the microphone/sensor/whatever it is sits inside the machine, at the back of the tubing channel. to actually be able to record voice, it would be quite a sophisticated mic, even with no tubing connected.

but i still fail to see what useful data could be gleaned from this sensor. the machine doesn't know which specific mask you are using, nor any non-proprietary heated tubing you are using.

i would assume the same leak data that is visible to oscar would be better information, but i'm not an egghead at resmed.
