After major surgery Issues
Hello everyone, I recently had total hip replacement surgery and since have had terrible insomnia and anxiety, so much so I cannot tolerate my CPAP. I have been a religious user for 6 years, never missed 1 night! and now I just cant sleep with the mask on as I hyperventilate and get extremely anxious. It has been horrible as I get 3-4 hours of poor sleep now, I am a wreck.
Thanks for listening!

RE: After major surgery Issues
Welcome to Apnea Board!
Recovering from any surgery, especially something as major as hip surgery will play havoc on your sleep, even without Cpap. If you have a recliner, it might be beneficial for you to move your Cpap equipment and rest there until you recover/heal and be able to get back to sleeping normally. It sounds like it's just a bit of anxiety right now, and will pass with time. Have you checked with your doctor as he can prescribe something to help you relax and sleep. If you like, post a couple OSCAR charts and we can take a look and be sure that looks ok. See the links in my Signature Line to guide you.

RE: After major surgery Issues
Thanks so much for the reply! I made a DR appt this pm with my pulmonologist who oversees my CPAP etc. Hopefully he can break this frustrating cycle! After 6 years of not missing a day on CPAP this has been a nightmare.
Thanks again, I'll let you know what he recommends.

You can also try wearing the mask with the machine on for a bit several times a day. Slowly increase the time until you feel more comfortable with it. Wear while reading or watching tv, something to distract you.

Thanks ! good idea, this is so strange as I have been religiously using CPAP for 6 years never missed a day? I guess major surgery can trigger weird outcomes.

RE: After major surgery Issues
Could be leftover anesthesia. Depending on age, it can linger for a while with weird side effects. My wife's dad got angry and mean after every surgery once he got over 70. They had to put this burly male orderly in his room at all times. Morphine made it worse. If you are on pain meds, ask your doc if anxiety is a side effect.
