[CPAP] Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
#1
Question
Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
Hi guys,
I've tried CPAP a few times and had a lot of difficulty falling asleep with it.  When I was able to fall asleep with it a few times, though, the pattern was the same: I would wake up almost immediately after falling asleep with the mask on.  This also happened when we did an in-lab test with CPAP: I would fall asleep with some difficulty, but then would wake up almost immediately each time.

I've tried tinkering around with different pressure and masks but have gotten the same results.  Does anyone have any similar experience or suggestions?

I have recently bought a biPAP machine but have yet to be able to fall asleep successfully with it - was on it for over 2 hours while taking 2 sleeping pills last night, but unable to fall asleep until I took it off.

Any help or advice would be appreciated - I can share more details if they would be helpful.

Thanks!

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
What are your settings - Min pressure, Max pressure, EPR setting or on bipap the PS setting.

I know you would not have an all night OSCAR set of charts but the left side of OSCAR will tell us much more about the setting you are on. OSCAR is a totally free software that can be downloaded at the top of the site. You would need an SD card to go into the cpap if it does not come with one....

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
I started with min pressure 5, max pressure 25, I think the PS on the biPAP was 4

I played around with adjusting the min pressure up to 10, then eventually went back to 5.  I have OSCAR on my laptop but I don't think I've "linked" my machine to it yet.  I'll take a look and see if I can provide more data.

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
Lazarus, you managed to post a summary statistics, the daily details will be more helpful. Tutorials for organizing your Oscar charts and attaching image files are both linked in my signature. The chart you posted shows your events are all central apnea so we're going to give you some modified settings until you can post a useful chart. These settings assume your problem is mainly related to the clear airway events and is based on the fact your best results were with the Autoset CPAP and your historic results show zero flow limitations. If you have any information on your sleep test diagnostics it would be interesting to see a copy with redacted personal information. Everything here suggests you don't have an obstructive sleep apnea problem.

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
Thank you!  Please find attached my latest daily chart.  I've never been able to sleep with my aPAP or biPAP machine.  On the occasions I am able to fall asleep, I wake up pretty much immediately, and my events seem to be high (15-19 AHI).  Please find attached my latest daily chart, where I was attached to the machine for about 2.25 hours but didn't fall asleep.  I took two sleeping pills (not at the same time), and I did get up a couple of times to use the bathroom or get water.

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
This is pretty much what I expected. Try the settings I outlined above with reduced PS and use a Very-High trigger sensitivity. I have to wonder if even have obstructive sleep apnea, or if your problems are all central. Do you have a sleep test?

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
Thank you for the suggestion - I will try those settings.  Yes, I have had two separate in-lab sleep tests, both of which diagnosed me with obstructive sleep apnea, and not central sleep apnea.  What results from those tests would be helpful for me to share?

RE: Waking up immediately upon falling asleep with CPAP
If you have the hypnogram that shows events, sleep position, sleep stage, etc, that would be ideal. FWIW all sleep studies diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, even when events are all central. DAMHIK.
