[Equipment] Advice on using an old (nearly unused) Resmed S9

Hello Sleep Apena Board,

I found an old Resmed S9 Autoset that I purchased new in early 2014 (S9 + humidifier + climateline + full mask). I used it minimally (few weeks) before shelving it because I couldn’t adjust to the device and mask. 

After a recent sleep study, I’ve decided to try to go back to CPAP training and was wondering if I could use the device again (noting that even though it has been almost a decade, the device appears to work). Would anyone have any thoughts on what maintenance I should do beforehand? e.g. should I replace the (nearly unused) mask given that it has be so long, or can I get away with cleaning it in detergent, replacing the S9 filter etc?

I would rinse the hose, water tank with vingear .. 
Wash everthing from the machine outlet to the mask in mild soapy water, rinse and hang to dry ..  
Wipe down the machine with a damp cloth .. Replace the inlet filter .. If the mask cushion is soft and
flexible I would even try using it .. If not replace the cushion .. Put it to use ..

Thanks Steve! The Resmed manual implied that the mask, tubing and even device had a limited lifespan so wasn’t sure if there were any potential issues (e.g. plastic degradation or bacterial) that I should be wary of.

I would take the equipment for a spin. A few nights, and viewing the results in OSCAR, should tell you what is going on. Then you can replace the parts that might be too far gone or aren't working well for you. You might also find that the machine settings need a bit of adjustment. As for degradation and pathogens, there is nothing to worry about with your Resmed S9. 

I bet that the mask is still good, but you may find that you do better with less than a full face mask. Many doctors and DMEs start people on full faced masks, and then wring their hands when the patient gives up on the machine and mask. Plan on doing a bit of shopping on the mask. And bear in mind that the published lifespan of equipment is to increase sales, and has little to do with how long things actually last. And one more comment on the mask: Full faced masks are the devil for leaks (not to mention comfort), and if your leaks (see OSCAR) are over 24L the machine cannot completely produce the prescribed therapy.

I would also recommend getting a copy of your prescription from the people who did your initial study (it's your right to a copy of the prescription). Once you have the prescription you can order anything online (See Supplier List, at the top of every page here). Online suppliers tend to give lip service to prescription requirements; making sales is more important.

You are just beginning, so you have a big learning curve ahead of you. Apneaboard is your main source of information, but poke around everywhere on the net. And for heaven's sake, ask questions. The only stupid question is the question not asked.

The machines are supposed to have a average use life of about 5 years ..
If You research on Apena Board a little most live much longer ..
