I've never had much problem on the lung side of using tap water. Our bodies are filters to begin with. Do you really think that there isn't a little bit of human feces on your toothbrush at the moment?
More importantly though, beware that if you use tap water too frequently it can cause mineral buildup.
On the flipside, not using the humidifier can be much worse for your mouth. Keeping your mouth moist helps keep bacteria levels lower and helps your teeth as well.

As cheap as distilled water is the decision for me is a no brainer.
