Question on using a Resmed S9 vs a Dreamstation 1

Question on using a Resmed S9 vs a Dreamstation 1
Hey guys. Quick question. I'm new to this board. I recently came from an old 17+ year old Resmed S8 Escape II.

My father was nice enough to give me my moms old Resmed S9 Autoset. It's pretty nice compared to my old unit. I've been using it for almost 2 weeks now. It's cool being able to see the data in Oscar.

My dad called me and asked if I want his old Dreamstation 1 that was recalled. My dad is retired military, so they just ended up sending him a new unit last year and they let him keep his old one.

He offered to let me have it. He told me about the issue of the recall with the filter issue. I read the stuff online and youtube about it. He told me he removed the foam filter from inside the machine. I assumed he watched one of the youtube videos.

Would you guys take the machine over the Resmed S9? His Dreamstation is newer than my mom's Resmed S9.  He mentioned you can view your sleep info from a phone app. Even with the filter completely removed, would you still use it? I would check it first to make sure it really was removed and no particles are still left floating behind. I did see on Amazon they sell a replacement empty plastic chamber that I can buy as well for the DreamStation If I needed to.

Just curious what everyones thoughts are on this or is this recalled model a real POS and to stay away and not use it. I couldn't really tell online if running the machine without the internal filter is an issue or was it striclty just mainly for noise dampening or if I needed to acquire a new Philips filter for the inside housing? I assume I can easily get into the Dreamstation service menu and make my own changes of the air pressure like I did with the S9.

Thanks

The S9 because of it's implementation of EPR it acts like a limited BiLevel thus you have more treatment options.

It is not uncommon for us to tell a Dreamstation user that we could have easily handled that with a ResMed.

That said you always want a backup, in case your primary breaks down. The dreamstation will be good for that.

Yes, I'd take the DS1 for sure, it can run straight cpap mode with c-flex+, it's also better than the Resmed S10 (I've used both).  We can help you try both machines though and you can see what you prefer, I prefer the Dreamstation line of machines (my S10 FH was new and I titrated down to 2ahi with it, but slept worse).

I've remediated (removed the original airpump chamber and replaced with a non-foam model) mine and 6 others for people that needed their systems and couldn't wait for the recall machines, but if he gave you the remediated one then it has the white foam. But if he replaced that with the foamless or removed it himself (I did that in 2018) then use it. Also post your Oscar charts for both, but be reminded that comfort is the key to therapy, regardless of the ahi difference is between 1 or 3.
