I am currently optimizing my CPAP therapy and as a part of this I also bought some different masks to improve my leakage. I have been a long time user of the Resmed AirTouch N20 (medium) nose mask and last night I tried the Resmed Mirage FX (standard) nose mask for the first time.
The good news is that fit, comfort and leakage (95 % = 0; time over leak 0,4 %) were great the first night already, so that looks promising! But.....
This night I woke up ALL THE TIME during REM, and every time I had clear recollections of what I dreamt and they were all rather weird and many different "story lines". But the weirdest of all are several moments where I was fully aware of my eyes moving as they do in REM! Can't recall I ever had this before in my 48 years.
I checked my OSCAR data for strange trends/values (none) and my mask for issues (none). The only thing I found is that I forgot to change the mask type on my Resmed 10 AutoSet, it was still on "pillows" while it should have been "nasal". Surely this can't be the reason?
Without this experience, this would have been my new mask for coming time, but now I am a bit reluctant. I do not feel "more broken" after waking up than normal, but let's see what the rest of the day brings. I have issues of waking up during REM with the N20 as well but much, much less and less intense.
Does anybody recognize this full awareness during REM?
How can only a mask change cause this? There are differences in "resistance drop" (N20 = 2 x Mirage) and maybe "dead space volume" (Mirage = 93 ml, for N20 only mentioned for large = 103 ml) but I can't imagine this is the cause.
Is it maybe indicative for what I can improve for my sleep and CPAP therapy?
