[split] Need help with Clear Airway Events.
........ appreciate this is an old post, but i came searching after i seen a lot of the clear airway events in my data.

I am new to the CPAP, having only used it for 2 nights.

Last night I had over 80 of these events compared to something like 20 actual apnea events, my AHI for that night was 5.5 (down from 57 without CPAP)

Most of the CA events are 10 - 15 seconds, however there are also quite a few of these that are up in the 20 seconds and a couple in the 30s with the highest being 39.

Should I be worried?

I don't think so. Your CA index will likely drop as you adapt to CPAP therapy. If not, there are adjustments that can be made, but we have to wait to see if it drops all by itself.

The first hurdle to cross is compliance, so congratulations on your success there. You have to use the machine or it won't do you any good!  Smile

The next is leaks. Your leak rate is marginally acceptable. I'd like to see it lower. Contact your equipment provider and tell them you want to try a different full face mask. This is something that almost everyone has to do, and for this reason your insurance will almost certainly cover it.

The third and final hurdle is getting your AHI below 5. And like I said, we will likely see that drop as you adapt.

Thank you so much for your reply. The leakage wasn’t too bad the night before. But seemed to be worse last night. I do think the mask isn’t suitable but I’m going to give it a week or so first.

I’m in the U.K. so no insurance and the NHS are so slow that I had to buy my own machine and mask. Each mask ~£150 so I’d rather be sure I need to change it out.

I really appreciate your guidance in the CA events. Will see how we go over the next week or two with that as well. The previous night was pretty bad with it being quite a bit better last night. So hopefully it’s as you say.

Thanks again

Another nights sleep, more data, not much better, if anything worse.

I did up the pressure a bit, I will knock it back down tonight, think it was a bit high for me, woke with what feels like muscle pain between my shoulders.

That is mostly erratic awake breathing. It also looks flow limited though difficult to determine at this resolution. The stats say 0.15, heavily flow limited. Add on EPR at least 2 for now 3 would be ok, to betteranage your flow limits.

Contact the vendor who sold you the mask. They probably have a policy that allows you to exchange it at a reduced cost, or maybe even for free. Almost everyone has to try a variety of masks before they find one that works well for them, hence vendors have these replacement policies.

thanks for the replies

i put EPR to 1 last night, have not analysed my data today yet, will do that later, but will consider moving it to 2 tonight, it did feel much easier to breath with that set to 1.

I will also contact resmed direct who i bought the mask from, to see if they can offer a replacement. I do have a beard so it takes a while to get a reasonable seal before i go to sleep.

Look at the Amara View. That worked with my very full beard and stash. Think Santa.

I trained myself to be a nasal breather and now use the P10 nasal pillow mask.
