New car smell months later

New car smell months later
I’m absurdly sensitive to smells. Smells that other people can’t even detect are overwhelming for me. I got my machine last year and I’ve been trying to use it on and off since then. So far I’ve never managed to sleep with it. Various problems including struggling to adjust to breathing pressurized air (choking sensation), getting distracted by the rapid oscillation, general discomfort, etc. And the new car smell.

I’ve tried soaking and washing my humidifier, hose, and mask in baking soda, soap, and vinegar. I’ve tried running the machine continuously for days to try to ventilate the equipment. I haven’t tried taking the machine apart to clean the inside.

I know to most people the smell is unnoticeable or minor or goes away after a few days, but that is not the case for me. It presents a real barrier to treatment for me. What else can I try??

I can assure you that the problem is not mould or the physical placement of my machine (intake). The hose, the mask, and the machine itself all seem to have this chemical smell independently, even though I’ve had them for months.

Honestly I’d give up on treatment if I didn’t feel like complete sh*t 24/7.

We have family members like you, Super Smellers or hyperosmia, they refuse to even fill their own gas tank. On the bright side there are some fascinating career fields open for hyperosmia, do you like wine?

Unfortunately you may have to disassemble your machine to clean it. If your Resmed is over two years old it is probably out of warranty, so that should not hold you back.

Good luck.

Have you tried a shot of Ozium Air Sanitizer, which has been clinically proven to eliminate odors?

If using Ozium, it comes in original and a scented version. Needless to say, avoid scented.
